My journey on becoming a vegetarian – part 3

Becoming a vegetarian is not always easy. That’s why I want to take you on our journey and share our experiences, our struggles and even some recipes with you. It has been almost 3 months since we started this journey, and I have to be honest by saying that in the last month, I’ve been missing meat, especially chicken. Not all the time, but sometimes.

Because we’re traveling, it’s hard to create a lot of variety into our diet. For the last year, we’ve been living in meat heavy countries, and this is a real challenge if you want to maintain a vegetarian diet. Whenever we go out for lunch or dinner, the’re hardly any items on the menu that are vegetarian, or they are really boring. So we’re relying a bit more on home cooking, and that’s where we struggle.

We’re back in Serbia and fortunately there are a lot more options when it comes to veggies and fruit. So after our first shopping trip we bought passion fruit, blueberries, strawberries, pears, kiwis, apples, spinach (oh my, have I missed spinach!), leak, broccoli, and so much more. It’s veggie and fruit heaven!  When I see all of this goodness, it makes me so happy and very motivated to keep going. And even better, yesterday we found veggie burgers and veggie fingers in the freezer section!! This makes life so much easier when I’m out of inspiration or when I don’t have a lot of time to cook.

After a week of eating better (more different kinds of vegetables and fruit), we’re also starting to feel more energized. The last couple of weeks we felt tired, and didn’t have a lot of energy. Our overall mood wasn’t the best. But it makes sense, because when you do not have enough variety in your diet, you’re not getting enough vitamins and minerals.

Do I still want to be a vegetarian?

The answer is: yes. At least for now. To be honest, I’m still a bit conflicted sometimes. I mean, I love fruit and veggies, but I also like the taste and smell of meat. It’s our own choice to do this, that means we can also choose to stop whenever we want. So far we’ve already invested 3 months, and I kind of want to see how long we can last. We might surprise ourselves and become vegan at one point! Time will tell. I’ll keep you posted!
