Paul and I both like hamburgers a lot, so I had to figure out a way to make burgers without meat. There are so many recipes online for vegetarian burgers, that I felt really inspired to make my own. I like to cook with (red) lentils a lot, because they are hearty and almost taste meaty. So why not try and make burgers out of them.
Most of the recipes include using a food processor, but because we don’t have one, I finely chopped all the ingredients by hand. The basic ingredients for these burgers are lentils, garlic, carrot and onion, and I used egg and breadcrumbs as a binder.
Flavors are personal, but I love cumin and chili flakes, so I always try to include that into my spice mixture. I also love fresh coriander, but this herb is really hard to get in the Balkans, so I use dried parsley instead.
Mixing everything together and padding them into a burger shape, they actually look quite good! I am genuinely surprised!
A small tip: you really have to make a firm mixture before forming them into a burger, otherwise they will fall apart during the pan frying process.
After cooling them in the fridge for about 30 minutes, I pan fry them in a bit of olive oil for about 8 minutes, and they are starting to look like proper burgers! Very curious about the taste!
This is the end result and I feel proud! The taste was really good! It has a meaty texture and good flavor, the outside of the burger was crispy and the inside juicy.
If you would like to try them, you can find the recipe here.
