Looking at the stars

I love stargazing! Since I was little I loved looking at the stars. An escape from life, just dreaming away, but also asking myself so many questions at the same time: ‘What is out there?’, ‘Is there life outside of Earth?’, ‘Do wishes really come true?’, ‘What made the world and everything in it exist?’, etc. These questions never got answered, and that is okay. I like the mysteriousness of the stars and the universe.

Over the years I have experienced some really cool night skies filled with stars. I slept under the stars in a swag in West Australia, went dolphin swimming at 5AM in Zanzibar, saw many beautiful skies in Jamaica and Mexico, but my most memorable moment of stargazing happened in Bolivia. Paul and I traveled South America for 3 months and did everything by bus. In the middle of the night we were driving over the border from Argentina to Bolivia and we stopped for a bathroom break in the middle of nowhere. While stepping outside of the bus, I looked up, and my jaw dropped! There were so many stars, and it was so bright! I think I even saw a galaxy! Paul and I just stared at the sky for minutes (almost forgetting the purpose of this stop, oops). It was the most beautiful thing that I’ve ever seen! This is one of those moments I will remember for the rest of my life and I regret not taking any pictures of this!

This photo was taken just after the sun came up over the Salar de Uyuni. We woke up around 3.30AM, drove in the dark, and walked up to the viewing point, faced the wrong direction first, but managed to experience this beautiful phenomenon!

It made me feel grateful. Grateful to be alive, to be able to experience the beauty of our world and beyond! We live on a beautiful planet and as I wrote in one of my previous posts, we should do what we can to take care of it. Whenever I look up to the sky, to the stars, I forget my troubles for a while, remembering the people I’ve lost, but most of all, clear my thoughts. Just for a small moment, I am not thinking about anything. My mind is empty, and it’s a great feeling!

There is a song by Kygo about stargazing and the intro of the song is so strong: ‘If you need me, you can always find me in the stars’. It gives me comfort, because whenever I miss someone (that is not here anymore), I look up to the sky and feel a sense of calm coming over me. Curious about the song? Listen to it here.

How do you feel when you look at the stars?
